The Maid Slapped Me And My Husband Laughed. Three Months Later, Neither Of Them Was Laughing.

Chapter 16: The Contract

Gerald opened the leather folder, and Ivy’s crown fell before he read a single word aloud.

The room felt it before she did, because old houses recognised ownership faster than thieves ever learned patience or manners.

Broken porcelain glittered on the marble beneath Serena’s winter branches and Ivy’s shaking shoes, bright as little invoices waiting.

Six months earlier, Ivy Chen had entered Whitmore House as Julian’s live-in maid, grateful, quiet, underpaid, and watched.

Later, he promoted her to personal maid, private convenience, and public insult, while pretending desire was authority and elevation.

Now she stood in Serena’s cashmere, expecting silk to rewrite payroll, staff records, property law, and memory itself.

Gerald placed one finger beneath the final clause and read calmly, as if serving tea to a judge.

“Employer: Serena Whitmore.”

Julian’s face tightened, because the first word had already chosen Serena.

Gerald continued, each line removing him from the house he had claimed at dinners, lunches, and bank meetings.

“Residence authority: Serena Whitmore. Staff appointment and dismissal authority: Serena Whitmore or appointed counsel.”

Ivy laughed once, but the sound cracked before it reached confidence or found support among the watching staff.

“That is old paperwork.”

“It is current paperwork, Miss Chen.”

“You used to assign my laundry shifts.”

“Yes.”

“Then remember who I am now.”

Gerald looked at her borrowed sweater, Serena’s bracelet, and the broken vase between them, cataloguing each offence.

“I remember exactly who you were hired as.”

The sentence dressed her back in black uniform without touching a button, and every servant in the hall heard it.

Julian snatched the contract and read too fast, hunting for language that obeyed him, rescued him, named him.

He found dates, signatures, restrictions, and Serena’s name where his power should have been printed in bold.

“I live here,” Ivy said, because denial needed somewhere to stand before it collapsed in front of servants.

“As Mr Ashford’s guest,” Gerald replied.

“Guest?”

The word struck harder than Ivy expected, because guests could be moved, limited, watched, billed, and asked to leave.

Julian stepped forward. “Careful, Gerald.”

“Always, sir.”

“She is with me.”

“That concerns your private conduct, not household authority.”

A footman near the door studied the wallpaper with heroic discipline and failed not to breathe too loudly.

Ivy caught the almost-smile anyway, and that small witness ruined her more than shouting.

“Fire him,” she told Julian, desperate for one command in the room to belong to her.

Julian looked down at the contract again, and silence answered for him before pride could find a costume.

He could not.

The man who had let his maid slap his wife could not dismiss Serena’s butler.

Gerald gathered the porcelain shards onto a linen-lined tray, careful as a clerk collecting evidence for court.

“The damage report will go to Mr Vale, with the access report for private rooms.”

Ivy’s hand moved to the bracelet.

Every servant saw it this time, because shame had made her movements too loud and too late.

Julian’s phone buzzed, ugly and loud inside the elegant room, breaking the last pretence of command he owned.

Derek Price.

He ignored it, until the preview appeared on the screen: Expense review urgent.

Ivy lost colour before Julian answered, because expenses meant receipts, receipts meant Serena, and Serena meant consequences.

Gerald stopped at the door, holding the broken porcelain like a verdict nobody in that house could appeal.

“Until Mrs Whitmore instructs otherwise, Miss Chen may remain in guest areas only.”

Then he added the blade gently, without looking at Julian for permission.

“Former staff are not permitted to self-promote into private rooms.”

Ivy stood among the fragments, wearing Serena’s bracelet, and finally understood the house still knew where the maid’s staircase began and ended, behind her, below her feet, and beneath Julian.
